In a span of 9 hours, NC State gave head coach Mark Gottfried a raise and contract extension, and lost their season opener by 17 at home to one of the worst NCAA Division I programs.
I guess Debbie Yow thought right before the season started was as good a time as any to add a couple of million dollars to her budgeted expenses. Gottfried’s previous contract paid him a little over $2 million per year and ran through 2018. His new contract adds about $420,000 to his annual salary and extends to 2020.
The team promptly responded to this show of faith in their head coach with a blowout loss at home in their season opener to one of five original NCAA Division I teams that has never made the NCAA tournament.
These are the kind of results that can bankrupt an athletic department.
Unbeaten teams remaining: 305 (Sorry, North Carolina St.).
